Worldwide myths, legends and superstitions have surrounded animals, animal spirits and mythological creatures from the beginning of recorded human history. Some of our earliest evidence of this is in the form of cave paintings dating back over thirty thousand years which included the use of animal masks and depictions that were part human and part animal. In some cultures, animal spirits were a part of everyday life and they were called upon in religious and spiritual ceremonies as well, some of which included ritualistic animal sacrifices. These traditions including South American, Native American, Celtic cultures and more date back from hundreds to tens of thousands of years, some of which survive to this day. Many of these rituals were aligned with ancient calendars and with the constellations. Even just a few hundred years ago, Nostradamus is known to have used more constellations than the twelve commonly accepted astrological signs in use today.
